3.1 research

Because of my specialism for the second yeah of 3D modeling I have searched for and 3D modeling portfolios to search for and to then compare with each other.

Art station

This is a professional portfolio of a 2D artist, this persona has layed out their work exquisitely, they have made drawings for characters, objects and as well as textures , this demonstrate his skill drawing A wide range of things in a wide variety of settings with difference in the themes. He has also used a good amount of detail in the writing in the picture, as we can see from his pictures which he has put as his cover and put the writing onto to show the series of his creations it goes onto.

This is a student portfolio, at first I can immediately see that has has spend a lot of time setting up his work in art station, we can see he has set and categorized his pieces into collections which show off his work in a range of different ways, for each on he has put his own caption to explain hat he has done and what we can expect to see from his work.

we can see this person has been working on 3D texturing as well as 2D art which shows he has a wide understanding on what to do showing that he could be a concept artist or a 3D textures which is good because it makes this person more desirable for the industry.

Sketch Fab

Here we see a portfolio set up by a company to show off their work, as we can see their 3D models are quite good, they are made of lots of polys and tris however they have been optimized to not have unnecessary polys in their models, they have been textured very well so shows that they known how to unwrap the models well but also there skills in texturing softwear showing they have good artists with them to give the objects the best look for them, the animations are smooth and well passed so they look realistic but the animation isn’t too passed so that the viewer cant keep up with whats going on, this whole layouts of their models are well put even their collection seeming to be closely to a theme or type of object they wanted to create, the textures have the right amount of shine to them to make them look good enough and their environment scenes is very detailed showing that the artists pay close attention to what they’re creating.

Here is a students example of a portfolio in sketch fab, we can see this is quite simple in terms of the models he has created, we also see in the second row center of a test that he has done and uploaded to demon straight that has has, none of these 3D models are not animated, they do differ in shape and size throughout the pieces of work, they also don’t look as good as the professional standards models but does show improvement from the earlier models to the later models showing that the user is learning.

• Layout and Navigation.
• Menus.
• Font type and colour.
• Background colour or image.
• Identify good and bad design.

Screenshot 2-3 examples of portfolio providers and consider the following:

• Is it free?
• Does it look professional?
• Do they have an appropriate layout you like?
• Is it suitable for presenting student work e.g. finished work, sketches, life drawing, ideas generation etc?

Finally identify which provider you plan to use.

Google Poly

This website is google ply, this is a similar site to sketch fab, this website of for 3D modelers who can upload their models and let others see them.

The layout of this website is relatively simple, the portfolio of yours can be accessed on the top right corner where the account profile picture is located which the user can see their own models and settings which they can edit, the search bar can be used for searching models but not profiles which may seem good but altogether is not that professional. while the layout of the website does seem to be quite organized making the website look professional the colour scheme of the website does seem to be a little too basic making it look much more childish,

I am not a big fan of this website and I wouldn’t use this as a portfolio provider for quite a few reasons. my first reason is the simple reason that most of the models on here are not very good, most models are actually quite bad making it not a very good place for employers to look for good and experienced modelers. my second reason is that all the models on here are available to download by other users which means its easy for people to steal work from you and claim it as their own, as I do now want this I am strongly against using this website as a portfolio provider

Here I have found a 3D modelers portfolio. the first thing I would like to say is that to find a profile who had more that 3 items which gives me a very strong idea that google poly is not that good of a portfolio provider. The layout of the user profiles is very basic and far to simplistic making the website look childish and unprofessional. The individual for the objects we are looking at posts on this website does not give a bio or a description for the posts so we cant get any idea about who had made the object we are looking at the methods he used or even when the object is if its not properly specified in the name making the look very minimalistic.

In conclusion while google poly is definitely a choice and a somewhat good choice as the websites is built specifically for 3D modelers.

Marmoset

For my final choice for my portfolio provider I have decided to use sketch fab, while Art station is more flexible and I could very well link my sketch fab to my art station so I could then have Two portfolio providers however since I m somewhat used to sketch fab from my other projects such as my Victorian dagger and my potion bottle I already have an easy to access account which I can make my main portfolio

Update: sketch fab has recently placed a credit system on its software meaning that I cannot upload as many models as I wanted to unless I pay for them, this credit system limits me to upload only one model a month which means I cant get enough models onto my portfolio quick enough, I’m going to put up with it to see how people reacts to this and how sketch fab reacts to their reaction, if this doesn’t change I may be moving to a different provider
